Beyond Ballots: Tracking the Promises that Matter

By: Siddonia Reid

Jamaica’s general election has come and gone. The rallies are over, the manifestos folded away, and the posters slowly peeling from the light poles. But the real story doesn’t end at the ballot box. In fact, it’s just beginning.

Every election cycle, parties and politicians stand before us with bold commitments: better schools, safer communities, stronger healthcare, jobs for youth, and infrastructure that finally meets the needs of the people. These promises aren’t just words; they are the foundation of the mandate voters hand over when they mark that X. Yet too often, once the dust settles, citizens are left wondering: where’s the follow-through?

This is where accountability comes in. Beyond ballots, our role as citizens is to hold those in power accountable for the promises that matter. That means asking the tough questions: Are policies being drafted to reflect campaign pledges? Is funding allocated in the budget to support these projects? Are MPs and ministers keeping their constituents updated on progress? When timelines slip, who is held responsible?

Some of the most critical areas to monitor over the next five years include education reform, healthcare access, economic growth, infrastructure development, and public safety. Each of these directly shapes everyday life. Tracking them isn’t about party colours, it’s about whether Jamaica is moving closer to the future we’ve been promised.

Elections decide leaders. Policies decide lives. It’s not enough to celebrate or complain after the results; the work now lies in holding leaders accountable and measuring progress. Democracy doesn’t end with voting; it thrives when citizens stay engaged long after the ballots are counted.

So as the new Parliament settles in, let’s pay attention not just to what’s said in speeches, but to what’s delivered on the ground. The promises have been made. Now, it’s time to demand that they keep them. Jamaica, this is a call to action. Be Aware, Be Alert, Be Awake and Be Active towards ensuring the Jamaica that we want to see.
